Intrauterine Insemination (I.U.I)

This is the most common and cost effective treatment which involves deposition of a washed sample of semen in the women's womb around ovulation. This procedure greatly reduces the distance that the sperm must travel to reach the female egg and also increases the amount of sperms available to the egg. Generally, 3 to 6 cycles of I.U.I are performed.

I.U.I Procedure

Intrauterine insemination (I.U.I) is a procedure which involves placing a sperm inside a woman's uterus to facilitate fertilization. It may also be selected as a fertility treatment with any of the following conditions:

  • Low sperm count
  • Decreased sperm motility
  • Requirement of donor sperm
  • Sexual Dysfunction

Also known as artificial insemination, intrauterine insemination is one of the most common assisted reproductive technologies. The woman's cycle is monitored using ultrasound and blood tests in the office. Fertility medications are sometimes used to enhance ovulation. At the time of ovulation, her husband or male partner produces a semen specimen which is prepared and inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity. The IUI procedure allows the sperm to be placed in closer proximity to the egg as it descends from the ovary through the fallopian tube.
